The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast is always looking for ways to improve the outcomes of the programs we provide our Members, ensuring our kids have the resources needed to succeed in life. The Club is proud to have partnered with Orange County United Way to bring a strategic Early Literacy program to our kids that helps tackle the academic achievement gap and summer learning loss crisis that so many of our children face. This initiative seeks to address the literacy gap by providing age-appropriate reading materials, targeted literacy intervention for children in grades K-3 through cutting-edge curriculum, and engaging families in bi-weekly family literacy nights. By further bolstering the academic environment at the Club and our school sites, program leaders and parents in partnership are working to ensure each child develops year-round, as well as a life-long appreciation for reading.
We are proud to report that, during our pilot of this program over the course of summer 2014, 94.4% of Club members maintained or improved their basic phonics skills and 87.5% maintained or improved their reading comprehension because of the Early Literacy program.*
